Timber Kitchen

Here is a recently completed family kitchen that I enjoyed working on earlier this year. At our initial meeting, my client stated that she was not after a white kitchen with minimal lines for her villa home - she said this was not her or character of the house. She later explained what she was after was 'Rock'n'Roll Nana' - a great description, right? She is an artist who wanted a kitchen that looked great, wasn't too precious for her creative family and to have her collection of teacups and objects on display.
This is the result - a dark stained timber kitchen with touches of white and vintage style cabinet handles. In contrast we used unstained timber for the two display shelves to highlight the collections. The bench top is stainless steel around the working area and the island is completed with a white high pressure laminate. It was great to visit the kitchen today and see the 'life' that it possesses.

Kitchen Shelving

When The Shelves You Have Just Aren't Enough Space

You can double the size of your kitchen, and triple the amount of shelves you have, it still won't be enough. Kitchen shelves fill up, and there is no such thing as spare space in a kitchen. That's just the way it is.
A lot of kitchens that we've seen, even the larger ones, tend to have a lot of enclosed cabinetry, and not enough open shelf space. There might be enough shelves for the dishes,

but what about kitchen bookshelves for your cookbooks?

Not only do you need space for books, but also for microwaves, vases, displays, radios, wine bottles, and a whole lot more. This plus decorations is what turns a kitchen into a warm, friendly room that invites you and your family to spend more time in it.

Even people who don't cook a lot tend to spend a lot of time in the kitchen, and it often becomes a warm, social area for interaction. In our home guests feel as comfortable in the kitchen as they do in our living room. By having open shelving strategically placed around the kitchen, we are able to display a nice collection of interesting bottles, all of our cookbooks, a few vases, and even some of our kid's art projects.

If you lack open kitchen shelf space, consider adding on either extra wall-mounted shelves, or choose from a wide variety of shelves and units that are designed specifically for the kitchen. These units come in a variety of designs, some with lots of open shelf space, some with drawers, and even some on wheels. They make handsome additions to any kitchen, and provide you with lots of extra space for holding books, artwork and more. Kitchen carts, buffets, sideboards, microwave stands and bakers racks are all designed to fit into available space in the kitchen, and provide you with additional surfaces for preparation, shelves for presentation and also drawers and baskets for storage purposes.

Shelving storage ideas

Divide the room and add space for everything

Separate living and dining areas with freestanding shelves. They'll add storage that can be accessed from both sides

How to style your shelving

* Display objects in between books - it'll lighten the overall feel

* Keep the look neat by tucking small items away in storage boxes

* Arrange books by size - it's more visually pleasing to have large ones at the bottom in deeper shelves

* For closed-back bookshelves, line the back of the shelves with wallpaper to add a personal touch

* Store oversized books horizontally to reduce the stress on their spines

* Put display items on eye-level shelves

* Light-coloured shelves divide without being too dominating; choose a darker unit for a greater impact.

* Create a focal point by grouping flowers in the middle of the unit - mix and match vases of different shapes and sizes for an eye-catching feature.

...............................

Create wall-to-wall shelving

Place three open shelf units flush to the wall to create the look of built-in storage that doesn't dominate the room - and requires no DIY

How to choose the right unit

* Allow 3cm to 5cm space above books so you can easily pull them out

Start advertisment

End advertisment

* For accessibility, go for units no higher than 21cm, with the top shelf at 180cm

* Shelves should be 30cm wide to fit larger books and 20cm for paperbacks, CDs and DVDs. Leave 25cm to 30cm between each shelf

* Hardback books are heavy, so need sturdy shelves. Slim shelves are only suitable for lighter paperbacks and ornaments

Stylist's tip
Keep the wall colour light to contrast with dark shelving and provide a backdrop for ornaments

...............................

Use box shelves to create a focal point

Shelving should suit the way you live and the space you have. Find a place for everything with these ideas using freestanding, wall-hung and modular shelves.

Shelving

Dressy Shelves

For a dressy look, cut sheer fabric in a half circle and hem the edge. Using a hot glue gun, attach small silk leaves (which can be found at any fabric store) to the hem of the skirt. Drape fabric over a sconce. To finish, repeat the leafy theme by attaching the same leaves to the branches and place in a vase on the shelf.

Stacking Shelves

If one shelf is nice, several can be wonderful! Use wood blocks or accessories from old cabinets and headboards, or any pieces lying about that you find architecturally appealing. Paint them white. Invert the painted pieces and attach shelf. To add interest, trim each shelf differently, using a hot glue gun to add lace edging, teardrop crystals, antique buttons, etc.

Picture Frame Shelf

To use picture frames to make shelves, first screw a thin strip of wood to the wall to create
a supporting ledge for the back of the glass shelf. The picture frames form the front support. To secure the frames, attach them at an angle from the wall by threading picture wire from the back of the frames to the eyebolts secured in the wall. Make sure the shelf is level, then secure the bottom of each from to the wall with drywall screws and begin to embellish.

Glass Shelves

For glass shelves with a sea theme, use two architectural elements as the bottom glass support. Place glass shelf on top of supports. Two marble-filled jars make the upper shelf support.
